House Improvements

We finally poured a driveway slab and sidewalk to the front door. We love how it turned out. Now people know where our front door is!!

Also, we discovered a beehive in one of the eaves of our roof. The beekeeper nearly filled a 10 gallon bucket with honeycomb and bees (africanized – yippee!) Glad to have them gone!

Irrigation

When we irrigate, our property looks like a lake; complete with ducks. We probably had 200 birds in our yard this day, including a pair of egrets. I love our new house!

My Nemeses

My parents have a picture of me around age 2. I have a fly on my hand, and I am crying hysterically. That pretty much sums up my feelings about bugs.

I get annoyed with flies, crickets, and beetles. I’m rather squeamish about spiders and roaches. I am terrified of scorpions. Unfortunately, we have all-of-the-above. I can handle most bugs and insects (usually with the bottom of my shoe), but I HATE scorpions.

It’s not just that scorpions are creepy-looking. It’s that they – at least the Arizona Bark Scorpions – pack a powerful, venomous sting. And I hate stings. And I have small children; and I dread the thought of them getting stung.

We are doing everything we can to eliminate these pests from our home: We got the house sealed and sprayed by professionals. We hunt them with a blacklight (they glow in the dark) and smash them. We are getting chickens (that eat scorpions, and everything else). We put cedar blocks in every dark corner and cabinet (I read that scorpions dislike the smell of cedar – I’m trying everything). And we laid glue traps (the super sticky kind used to catch mice) in “high traffic” areas.

I caught this fellow in one of my glue traps. I thought, “Good! My glue trap worked. He’s not going anywhere, I’ll throw it out later.” Well, when I came back later, he had freed all but his tail from the glue, and was trying to crawl away. Yikes! Let’s just say, he didn’t get far.

Anyone have any other foolproof ideas for eliminating/preventing scorpions?

Abby-isms

Pic 1: So the other day, we went to the park (this is Abby in the outfit she picked out). On the way home, she wrapped her jacket around her head, so she couldn’t see and had to stop to keep from tripping. I asked what she was doing. She said, “I’m hiding from the sun.”

Pic 2: I left Abby alone for 2 minutes with her watercolor paints. When I came back, she looked up at me (with green hands, lips, and tongue) and says, “Mommy, I don’t eat paint.” Of course.

New Year

This is what Abby has been up to since the new year started.

New Addition

Ha! You thought I was going to say we’re expecting a baby. Well, I’m not (even though we are). We adopted a new kitten. Her name is Magnolia Thunderkitty — Maggie for short. We all love her, especially Abby.

p.s. The baby is due July 4, 2010.

Apologies

We just updated our blog software, and are having some technical difficulties. The pictures on some of the older posts are missing. We are working on it, and they will be back up shortly.

I’ve never done anything like this before

…but it sounded like fun.

I got this off my cousin, Amy’s, blog. This is how this works: the first 5 people to respond to this post will receive something made by me for you. (my choice, made especially for you) There are, of course, a few ┬árestrictions and limitations:
1. I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
2. What I create will be just for you.
3. It will be done sometime this year.
4. You have no clue what it will be… and neither do I, yet.
5. I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.

The catch?
The catch is that you must repost this on your own blog and offer the same to the first 5 people who do the same on their blog. The first 5 people to do so and leave a comment telling me they did will win a FAB-U-LOUS homemade gift by me!! Oh! And be sure to post a picture of what you win when you get it!

Welcome to our blog

I know, I know. It took long enough, but now – finally – we have a usable blog. You will no longer receive emails full of gigantic image files. We will instead be posting (almost) daily updates here. Enjoy!
